The Koala Bear

The Koala is one of Australia's best known animals. It is an icon represented when promoting Australia to the tourist industry, and in general people adore these cuddly creatures. There are two species, the Southern Koalas and the Northern Koalas.

Koalas are often referred to as a Koala bear. However they are not a bear. The name Koala comes from an Aboriginal word. It means "no drink", as Koalas get enough fluids through the eucalyptis leaves they feed on. Koalas are found all over east Australia, mainly in the south east.

The male Koalas are larger than the females. Southern koalas are larger than Northern koalas. They have a grey soft furred coat, with a white chest. A flat nose and big ears, and clawed feet for climbing.

They are very placid animals, and do not move around much, they are only active for about 2 hours of the day.

The old Australian joke of "Koalas: Eats Roots & Leaves" is not quite correct. Koalas feed on eucalyptis leaves, which they have a variety of twelve different species to choose from. This is basically the only thing they do eat, although there are a few exceptions. 

Did you know? Koalas make an extremely loud and agressive growling noise.

Tarsius tarsier (Binatang Hantu/Kera Hantu/Monyet Hantu) adalah suatu jenis primata kecil, memiliki tubuh berwarna coklat kemerahan dengan warna kulit kelabu, bermata besar dengan telinga menghadap ke depan dan memiliki bentuk yang lebar.

Nama Tarsius diambil karena ciri fisik tubuh mereka yang istimewa, yaitu tulang tarsal yang memanjang, yang membentuk pergelangan kaki mereka sehingga mereka dapat melompat sejauh 3 meter (hampir 10 kaki) dari satu pohon ke pohon lainnya. Tarsius juga memiliki ekor panjang yang tidak berbulu, kecuali pada bagian ujungnya. Setiap tangan dan kaki hewan ini memiliki lima jari yang panjang. Jari-jari ini memiliki kuku, kecuali jari kedua dan ketiga yang memiliki cakar yang digunakan untuk grooming.

Yang paling istimewa dari Tarsius adalah matanya yang besar. Ukuran matanya lebih besar jika dibandingkan besar otaknya sendiri. Mata ini dapat digunakan untuk melihat dengan tajam dalam kegelapan tetapi sebaliknya, hewan ini hampir tidak bisa melihat pada siang hari. Kepala Tarsius dapat memutar hampir 180 derajat baik ke arah kanan maupun ke arah kiri, seperti burung hantu. Telinga mereka juga dapat digerakkan untuk mendeteksi keberadaan mangsa.

Tarsius adalah makhluk nokturnal yang melakukan aktivitas pada malam hari dan tidur pada siang hari. Oleh sebab itu Tarsius berburu pada malam hari. Mangsa mereka yang paling utama adalah serangga seperti kecoa, jangkrik, dan kadang-kadang reptil kecil, burung, dan kelelawar. Habitatnya adalah di hutan-hutan Sulawesi Utara hingga Sulawesi Selatan, juga di pulau-pulau sekitar Sulawesi seperti Suwu, Selayar, dan Peleng. Tarsius juga dapat ditemukan di Filipina. Di Taman Nasional Bantimurung Bulusaraung, Sulawesi Selatan, Tarsius lebih dikenal oleh masyarakat setempat dengan sebutan "balao cengke" atau "tikus jongkok" jika diartikan kedalam Bahasa Indonesia.

Tarsius menghabiskan sebagian besar hidupnya di atas pohon. Hewan ini menandai pohon daerah teritori mereka dengan urine. Tarsius berpindah tempat dengan cara melompat dari pohon ke pohon. Hewan ini bahkan tidur dan melahirkan dengan terus bergantung pada batang pohon. Tarsius tidak dapat berjalan di atas tanah, mereka melompat ketika berada di tanah.

The Story of Romeo and Juliet

The story revolves around three families from Verona. The Ruling House, the House of Capulet from where Juliet hails and that of Montague, the male protagonist's family. The story commences with a street brawl fired by the feud between the Montague and Capulet families. When the Prince of Verona announces that any further feud would result in punishment, Count Paris of the ruling house expresses his desire to marry Juliet, from the House of Capulet, who is only thirteen.

Meanwhile, after the brawl, Benvolio learns about Romeo's lost-love Rosaline, one of Lord Capulet's nieces. The estranged meeting between Romeo and Juliet takes place at the ball arranged for Count Paris to meet Juliet. Romeo meets and falls head-over-heels in love with Juliet. Romeo discloses his identity to her on being 'encouraged in love'. They seek the support of Friar Laurence, who longs for a reconciliation between the two families and are secretly married. Tybalt, Juliet's cousin challenges Romeo to a duel on discovering that he had sneaked into the ball. However, because of Juliet, Romeo refuses to fight him and calls on the ire of Mercutio, who accepts the duel instead of Romeo.

When Mercutio is wounded in the duel, Romeo slays Tybalt and is exiled for the latter's death. Juliet's grief is worsened when Lord Capulet makes plans for her wedding with Count Paris. She seeks a help from Friar Laurence. The plan they come up with is that Juliet would consume a drug that would take her into a coma for nearly three hours. Romeo was to be informed of the plan via a messenger, who doesn't reach him in time. On the eve of her marriage to Count Paris, Juliet takes the drug and is declared dead.

Romeo hears about her 'death' and buys poison before visiting the family crypt. Fate has other plans as Paris encounters Romeo and is killed by the latter. Believing that his lady-love is dead, Romeo drinks the poison. When Juliet awakes to discover Romeo's corpse, she stabs herself. The families meet at the tomb and hear the story of the lovers from the friar. They reconcile and the violent feud is declared over.

The exact date when William Shakespeare wrote Romeo and Juliet remains unknown. Though there is mention about an 'earthquake 11 years ago', the dialog highlights the earthquake in England in 1580. Hence, the popular belief is that the play was written in 1591. The dramatic techniques, paradigm shifts from hope to despair and then again rejuvenated hope adds emotion to the verse and strain of thought in prologue.

Batik Indonesia secara resmi diakui UNESCO dengan dimasukkan ke dalam Daftar Representatif sebagai Budaya Tak-benda Warisan Manusia (Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity) dalam Sidang ke-4 Komite Antar-Pemerintah (Fourth Session of the Intergovernmental Committee) tentang Warisan Budaya Tak-benda di Abu Dhabi.

Dalam siaran pers dari Departemen Kebudayaan dan Pariwisata (Depbudpar) yang diterima ANTARA di Jakarta, Jumat, UNESCO mengakui batik Indonesia bersama dengan 111 nominasi mata budaya dari 35 negara, dan yang diakui dan dimasukkan dalam Daftar Representatif sebanyak 76 mata budaya.

UNESCO mengakui bahwa Batik Indonesia mempunyai teknik dan simbol budaya yang menjadi identitas rakyat Indonesia mulai dari lahir sampai meninggal, bayi digendong dengan kain batik bercorak simbol yang membawa keberuntungan, dan yang meninggal ditutup dengan kain batik.

Pakaian dengan corak sehari-hari dipakai secara rutin dalam kegiatan bisnis dan akademis, sementara itu berbagai corak lainnya dipakai dalam upacara pernikahan, kehamilan, juga dalam wayang, kebutuhan nonsandang dan berbagai penampilan kesenian. Kain batik bahkan memainkan peran utama dalam ritual tertentu.

Berbagai corak Batik Indonesia menandakan adanya berbagai pengaruh dari luar mulai dari kaligrafi Arab, burung phoenix dari China, bunga cherry dari Jepang sampai burung merak dari India atau Persia.

Tradisi membatik diturunkan dari generasi ke generasi, batik terkait dengan identitas budaya rakyat indonesia dan melalui berbagai arti simbolik dari warna dan corak mengekspresikan kreatifitas dan spiritual rakyat Indonesia.

UNESCO memasukkan Batik Indonesia ke dalam Representative List karena telah memenuhi kriteria, antara lain kaya dengan simbol-simbol dan filosofi kehidupan rakyat Indonesia; memberi kontribusi bagi terpeliharanya warisan budaya takbenda pada saat ini dan di masa mendatang.

Pidato Soekarno Ganyang Malaysia

Untuk balas dendam, Presiden Soekarno melancarkan gerakan yang terkenal dengan nama Ganyang Malaysia. Soekarno memproklamirkan gerakan Ganyang Malaysia melalui pidato pada 27 Juli 1963. Berikut isinya:
